Equal Treatment on Friday, December 28, 2007 3:32:15 PM
Thank God for Canada and Europe, they provide for us many times the “don’t” on the big do and don’t lists of life. Canada almost immediately started struggling with legal issues over polygamy and other non-traditional relationships under the consenting adult concept of marriage. Look it up.
I am not an evangelical in the modern use of the term, I am Lutheran, a mainstream protestant tradition one in which, I might add, has at my church, two women pastors including the senior pastor and we welcome gays into the church, as fellow sinners, though not into the clergy.
I am not nor have I ever been anything other than pro-gay rights. I had a gay partner in my brokerage firm that I recruited and in technology, gays are, though I have never seen or taken a survey, over represented per the population I suspect and in fact, the US technology industry would perhaps collapse without them due to sheer numbers regardless of talent.
Being anti-gay marriage is not, I repeat not anti-gay rights and no torturing of language or emotion can make it so. I do support the constitution as equal protection affords, through our laws, gay men all rights that I have including the right to marry anyone they want, black, white, Russian or Chinese, as long as it is a woman.
I simply believe that all evidence points to the defending of marriage between a man and a woman as something that strengthens society. Children need mom’s and dad’s. Gays can live together, love each other, leave their possessions to each other, they can and do have, at least here in Minnesota, domestic partnership rights at work and in the legal system. Gays can manage their affairs with little effort beyond what a traditional marriage may have to do. Wives whose husbands die can and do face some challenges in accessing all monies and accounts if they were too short-sighted to set things up right. Gays have a few extra steps but all can be put in order easily and those who claim otherwise are flat out ignorant or liars.
Demonizing by the right happens but it is extreme naiveté that leads one to believe that the left does not engage in this behavior in equal measure. Please read the posts and the rhetoric of the left on strongly pro-gay marriage sites which sport a shockingly high % of people who believe I am literally a monster as a Christian who is anti-gay marriage.
